How to Make Screw Thread ?
Making a Screw Thread
Elementary Knowledge of Screws
Machine screws are extensively used for securing parts. The number of different types and sizes of machine screws, nuts & bolts prohibit the possibility of introducing them all here so the following information addressed the elementary information only.
Types of Threads
Almost of the thread have triangle shaped threads. On the other hand, square shaped and trapezoid shaped thereads are used moving machinery which need high accuracy, such as a lathe.
In respect to thread standards, there are a metric thread (M), a parallel thread for piping (PF), a taper thread for piping (PT), and an unified thread (UNC, UNF). The following information is related metric threads, because they are the most widely used in Japan and many countries around the world.
Terms used for Threads
Figure 1 shown an image of a thread. One of the most important terms used is that of the outer diameter. In the case of a metric thread, the bolt is named in accordance with its outer diameter e.g a bolt with a 5 mm outer diameter is known as an M5 bolt. The "Pitch" of the tread is another important feature of a thread. The pitch is defined as the interval (distance) between adjoining threads. e.g. Nuts & bolts must have the same pitch as well as diameter if they are going to be used together. The principles of cutting threads in nuts and bolts is that the bolt (male thread) is usually cut from a rod of material which has the same diameter has the intended finished bolt. The nut is made from a larger stock witch has a hole drilled through it that is slightly larger than that of the rod diameter. A thread of the same pitch is then cut which results in two mating threads. The same principles apply for cutting holes in places and other work pieces. (such an in the cylinder discussed earlier.) | Fig.1, Terms of Screw |
Fig.2, Imagine of Thread Cutting Processing
Screw and Clearance Hole
Screws are typically used for securing mating parts. When two pieces are joined together using screws, one piece is made with threads, and another piece is made with clearance holes, which have bigger diameters than that of the screws. If the diameter of the clearance hole is too small, the piece cannot be assembled as the screw will not fit through the hole. Also, if the diameter of the clearance hole is too big, , the piece will be loose as the hole will provide a sloppy fit. Therefore, we must provide make suitable diameter clearace holes. As a "rule of thumb", the diameter of the clearance hole has more 10 % than the diameter of the screw. For examples, the clearance hole for a M3 screw has 3.2 mm or 3.5 mm diameter. the clearance hole for a M4 screw has 4.2 mm or 4.5 of diameter. And we would make a hole with 5.5 mm of diameter for a M5 screw. | Fig.3, Screw and Clearance Hole |
Thread Making Process
Tread Cutting using a Hand Tap
Figure 5 shows taps which are used to make female threads. They are usually used with a tap handle as shown in Figure 6. In respect to the tread cutting process, we first, we make a hole with suitable diameter and suitable depth (see Table 1). Next, we start to turn the tap in a clockwise direction. There are typically three types of taps used as seen in figure 5. Of the three tap types there is a tapered tap to facilitate the initial thread cutting, an intermediate type that is used to progress the thread after it has been started and then finally, a "Bottoming" thread which is used to obtain the full thread depth when cutting a thread that does not go the whole of the way trough the piece. Taps can be easily broken and if the tap is broken in the work piece, it can be almost impossible to remove. It is therefore, very prudent to take care to ensure that metal chips do not build-up in the tap and also that the tap does not overheat as a result of the cutting process through the use of a cutting lubricant. | Fig.5, Taps |
Fig.6, A Tap with a Tap handle | Fig.7, Teread Cutting using a Tap |
Recommended Tap Hole Size Table 1 lists diameters of hole sizes for metric female threads and piping threads (PT, PF). Please note that the diameter of the hole equals the approximate difference of the diameter of the thread and the thread pitch. It may be necessary the allow a grater hole clearance if for example we were making a thread in hard stainless steel. |
Cutting using a Hand Die
Figure 8 shows a die and a die handle which are used to make male threads. The procedure of the threading is the same of the taps. But it is more difficult to start the thread cutting process than with tapping as dies do not have an equivalent to a tapered starting tap with perpendicular than the tapping. The thread cutting process using a die usually typically results in a smaller diameter of the original piece so care needs to be taken in selecting the correct size stock. If the stock is too small, this will result in a shallow thread depth resulting in an unsatisfactory thread. The die also created a bevel on the thread which is necessary for a close fit. If you have a lathe, the job of cutting a thread can be easier as it is possible to use the "STOPPED" lathe to assist in starting the thread as shown in figure 9. The die is pushed by the drill chuck aligned perpendicularly to the piece and after. After enough thread is cut, the drill chuck is removed and the die handle is then turned by hand. | Fig.8, A Die and A Die Handle |
Fig.9, Thread Making using Die
More on Threads How does the screw make perpendicularly? If the thread needs to be held perpendicular to the piece, then it is important that the thread incorporate a shoulder to act as a "load bearing surface" as depicted in figure 10.The threaded section does not have the mechanical properties necessary to remain perpendicular without such a shoulder. | Fig.10, How to Make Perpendicular Screw |
There are white alligators!

These alligators are extremely rare and there are only twelve in the entire world! They are often mistaken for albino, but this isn’t the case.
Their proper name is leucistic because they still have some pigmentation in their tail and mouth. Four are housed at the Gatorland theme park in Florida, and weigh up to 500 pounds!
The alligators are white because of a rare genetic mutation that reduces their skin pigmentation. As majestic as these animals are, they would never survive in the wild because of how vulnerable their condition makes them.
Mediastinal Seminoma Treatment & Management
Medical Therapy
The current therapy for seminomas depends on presenting features at the time of diagnosis and staging. Treatment usually involves a combination of surgery, radiotherapy, and systemic chemotherapy.[2]
In the past, primary treatment with radiation often yielded survival rates of 50-60%. The standard radiotherapy protocols call for 40-50 Gy delivered by external beam radiation to the mediastinum and supraclavicular regions. The neck region is included in the field of radiation because of the tendency of seminomas to initially spread to the cervical lymph nodes. Some oncologists also incorporate the axilla in the radiation field when the cervical nodes are enlarged. The radiation therapy is administered at a daily dose of 45-60 Gy over a period of 6 weeks. A failure of radiation therapy is believed to be due to the development of distant metastases rather than local recurrences. Combination treatment with radiation and surgery is not logical because both are aimed at achieving local control only. Because these tumors are bulky at presentation, the radiation may not encompass the entire tumor.
Complications
The complications of radiation are well known and predictable. Rapidly dividing cells are affected most significantly; these include cells of the dermis and the GI tract. Patients may present with nausea, vomiting, general malaise, poor wound healing, eczema, and ulcerations. The most frequent adverse effect is esophagitis, which occurs in most patients following radiation to the chest. This complication usually occurs 2 weeks after the start of radiation and subsides 1-2 weeks after completion.
All patients may have radiographic evidence of radiation-induced pneumonitis, but less than 5% of patients may be clinically symptomatic. Life-threatening pneumonitis occurs in less than 1% of patients.
Late complications may include bone deformities, cataracts, sterility, lung fibrosis, chromosomal damage, and, perhaps, an increased risk of cancer. Although rare, the risks of radiation-induced myocarditis and pericarditis are directly related to the amount of cardiac tissue near the field of treatment.
Chemotherapy
In the last decade, significant improvements in survival have been achieved with multimodal chemotherapy regimens involving bleomycin, cisplatin, and etoposide. Cisplatin-based chemotherapy has induced complete responses in a small number of patients with seminomas.[3] Chemotherapy is administered in 4-6 cycles, and intermittent pulmonary function tests are performed in all patients because of the toxicity of bleomycin to the lungs. At present, cisplatin forms the basis of most combination chemotherapeutic regimens that are active against seminomas.
Other agents used for chemotherapy are vinblastine, cyclophosphamide, and dactinomycin. The response rates are difficult to compare with most other study results because many of the studies on these 3 agents were not randomized. In addition, the patient populations have been heterogeneous, and the chemotherapeutic regimens have been different.
Chemotherapy clearly exerts a biologic effect in patients with advanced disease. Whenever possible during clinical trials, patients should be treated with either newer agents or a combination of agents. At this time, chemotherapy is sufficiently justified for use in patients with advanced disease, provided its limitations and toxicity are understood.
Cisplatin
Cisplatin is an important agent in the treatment of seminomas and is generally administered in combination with other agents in divided doses over 3-5 days. Cisplatin is recognized as an excellent agent because of its superior activity and its only modest myelosuppression. It generally acts in synergy with other chemotherapeutic agents. For this reason, it forms the basis of most combination regimens. In addition, cisplatin can be administered with thoracic radiation without undue toxicity.
Various platinum analogs, such as carboplatin and iproplatin, are now available. These agents induce greater response but may be more myelosuppressive than cisplatin.
Vinca alkaloids
Both vincristine and vinblastine have been used to treat seminomas. These agents act as mitosis inhibitors by binding to microtubules and causing arrest in the metaphase. Although these alkaloids share a similar structure, they have a wide spectrum of clinical activity and toxicity. They are almost always used in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents.
Etoposide
Etoposide, an epipodophyllotoxin, has only mild activity as a single agent but because of its synergy with other agents is always used in combination regimens. This agent shows phase-specific activity for cells in the dividing phase. The correct dosing is still being debated, but most authorities recommend long-term administration for weeks.
Ifosfamide
Ifosfamide is a non–cell-specific alkylating agent that is replacing cyclophosphamide in many studies. It can be used in higher doses than cyclophosphamide, although hemorrhagic cystitis is still a major adverse effect. It can also cause renal and hepatic dysfunction. Ifosfamide is generally administered intravenously.
Bleomycin
Bleomycin belongs to the antibiotic classification of chemotherapeutic drugs. It is derived from Streptomyces and causes breaks in the DNA molecule. Bleomycin is used in combination therapy and is usually administered parenterally. Although it has a number of adverse effects, the most well known is pulmonary fibrosis.
Complications of chemotherapy
Most chemotherapeutic agents are associated with adverse effects, and some have specific organ toxicity. Most produce nausea, vomiting, and flulike syndromes.
Cisplatin can cause renal dysfunction, and renal parameters must be constantly monitored. Cisplatin is also associated with ototoxicity, neurotoxicity, anaphylaxis, a Raynaud-type phenomenon, and local vesication.
Ifosfamide can cause myelosuppression, renal and hepatic dysfunction, hemorrhagic cystitis, alopecia, and confusion.
Etoposide can also cause myelosuppression and has been associated with bronchospasm, hypotension, and ileus.
Bleomycin can cause fever and pulmonary fibrosis.
Combination Therapy with Radiation and Chemotherapy
Recent clinical trials have demonstrated excellent results when multimodality chemotherapy is combined with radiation for large, localized mediastinal seminomas or extensive residual disease. In these cases, the patient is administered chemotherapy consisting of cisplatin, bleomycin, and etoposide. After the patient has recovered (4-6 wk), radiation is administered at a dose of 40-60 Gy for 4-6 weeks. A CT scan is then obtained to assess the response of the tumor to treatment. If only a small mass remains, it is excised.
Follow-up care
After radiation and/or chemotherapy, CT scans are delayed for 6 weeks to allow maximum reduction of the mass. Regular blood workups are obtained to assess the effects of chemotherapy on the bone marrow, kidneys, and liver. Residual disease as seen on radiographs following treatment is a medical dilemma. If CT scans reveal a residual mediastinal mass, surgery is offered; however, some patients still have viable seminomas or teratomas after excision.
If a small mediastinal mass remains after nonsurgical therapy, it must be excised; however, this treatment is not a universal protocol. Some oncologists instead prefer to monitor these masses with serial CT scans, a course that carries a risk of recurrent disease.

Germ cell tumors of the mediastinum are uncommon. Less than 5-7% of germ cells occur outside the gonads, but of the extragonadal sites, the mediastinum is the most common location for germ cell tumors. Other areas where germ cell tumors can occur are the retroperitoneum, the intra-abdominal cavity, and the chest. The exact mechanism whereby germ cell tumors originate in the mediastinum remains unknown.
Germ cell tumors in the mediastinum were first reported nearly 50 years ago. Pathological studies from autopsy data revealed that the tumors were usually large and frequently locally invasive.
The first theory on extragonadal malignant germ cell tumors postulated that the tumors developed from primitive germ cells in the endoderm of the yolk sac or from the urogenital ridge. These cells normally move into the scrotum during development, but when this migration fails, the cells may remain localized to either the mediastinum or the retroperitoneum. Other researchers hypothesized that these totipotential cells become detached during embryogenesis and result in primitive masses, which may develop into germ cell tumors. So far, however, no theory is proven.
No research documents that these cells metastasize from gonadal tissue. Mediastinal germ cells tumors are now postulated to be autonomous oncologic entities.

Avoid using Laptop on Bed is Dangerous
However, it is dangerous and fatal to use the laptops on bed.
Instances of death due to fire and electrocution while using laptops put on a charger have been already reported in Romania and New Zealand, where adolescents died of electrocution.
There have been reports of deaths due to fire and electocution by the use of laptops in India also.
In Kolkata in November 2011, Mr.Sayan Chowdhury, an IT- consultant was found dead on his bed due to fire and electrocution by his laptop plugged to the charger and the earphones fixed in his ears.
Now, in February 2012, again in Kolkata, another man- 30 years old Mr.Saptarishi Sarkar, a bachelor- employee of a private company, has been found dead close to his burnt laptop in his bedroom with all the windows and doors kept closed.
The victim appeared to have fallen asleep with a cigarette in his hand and the laptop kept nearby might have caught fire.
We must not use laptop computers and even mobile phones on bed and that too, as and when they have been plugged in to an electric power source for charging.
We must remember that the laptop computers are not mechanical machines and they are electrical/electronic machines.Any electric and electronic machine should be handled with care and caution.
Also, we should remember that our beds are to be used only for sleeping.
We must not use our beds for:

Why there is Power Cut in Tamilnadu ?
Shortage of Power and the Power Cuts in Tamilnadu are due to the following reasons:-
• Theft of Power:- Power thefts by factories, farms etc. are increasing and remedial measures are expected to be taken at appropriate levels.
• Non-Stringent/Over-usage of power by the Consumers/Public:-
Awareness must be created in the minds of the consumers, to use power stringently.
• Wastage of Power in Functions: Both in the private functions and public functions steps must be taken to reduce over-use of decorative lights etc.
• Shortage of Power Generation/Supply:- At Neyveli, the workers are on agitation/strike on various demands, which affects thermal power generation.
• Tamil Nadu is at present getting only 7,195 MW of power against the requirement of 8,000 MW.
• Wind mills are supplying 1,500 MW
• Hydel sources 1,000 MW
• Thermal 2,520 MW
• Power stations using gas are generating 321 MW.
• The state is getting 1,754 MW from the central pool, besides 100 MW from Kerala.
• The situation will not ease till the Russian-aided Koodankulam Nuclear Power station's first unit is commissioned next year.
Union Minister of State for Power Shri.Jayram Ramesh said that the entire country was facing a power shortage and the status quo could prevail for another six months.
However, for he first time in the recent past Tamilnadu is facing acute shortage of power. So,power cuts have been implemented in all parts of Tamilnadu, in the following rates.
• In Chennai city- 90 minutes
• In sub-urban areas- three hours
• In other places six hours
Based on the above facts, a Public Interest Litigation Petition(PIL) has been filed in Madras High Court.
The following is the News related to the above PIL filed and we have to see the outcome.
QUOTE:-“The Madras High Court Wednesday, the 10th September 2008, ordered the State government of Tamilnadu, to bring into force an exclusive policy on thrift usage of electricity and detailing guidelines for the public notice through advertisements on how to save power on a daily basis.
In an interim order issued on a public interest litigation (PIL), a division bench of Chief Justice A K Ganguly and Justice Ibrahim Kalifullah said the government should implement the policy for reducing power consumption within four weeks and prevent electricity theft through strict enforcement of law.
Taking a harsh tone, the judges pulled up the government for its lax enforcement which led to power theft at a time when Tamilnadu was reeling under power crisis.
Under a PIL filed by Vaseekaran, it was mentioned that the public had to suffer daily hardship because of the six hours of power cut.
Besides, there were unscheduled power cuts in many parts of the city adding to the misery of the public. ‘It is due to sheer administrative inefficiency of the government the people have to suffer from both regular and unscheduled power cuts in the day,’ the PIL said.
Further, it was announced that the power cut would be extended from six to eight hours daily and if such a move was implemented it would led to ‘irreparable loss to the people’.
Already, the existing power cuts had affected badly the farmers, small and tiny industries, hospitals and educational institutions. Each day, a small small unit had to incur a minimum loss of Rs 10,000 due to power cut, the PIL said.
While the government had announced tax cuts for diesel being used in industries, the scarcity of this fuel had led to the downing of shutters in many enterprises. In sharp contrast, government functions, cabinet meetings, political events and public meetings were being held with the electricity drawn illegally from other sources, claimed the PIL.
‘When there is acute power shortage for essential needs, the scarce energy is being wasted for extravagant shows and functions,’ according to the litigant.
Moreover, he requested the division bench to order the government for banning such extravagant functions and the State must curtail down on organising such meetings of pomp and splendour.
Hearing the PIL case, Chief Justice Ganguly asked the government pleader whether there was a policy had been formulated to save power consumption. Replying to the query, the lawyer said those who steal power would be convicted under the Indian Penal Code. To this, Ganguly wondered then why the culprits using stolen power had not be booked under the relevant IPC sections.
The Chief Justice ordered the government to formulate an exclusive policy on saving power and advertise the guidelines on electricity usage for the benefit of wider public. He gave four weeks time for the government to implement the court order”-UNQUOTE.
